How to make your own Picture Frame with Custom Molding

Creating a custom picture frame in your wood shop allows for personalization and showcases your woodworking skills. By crafting your own molding, you gain complete control over the design and dimensions of the frame.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • Wood Selection: Choose a straight-grained, defect-free wood such as oak, maple, or cherry for durability and aesthetic appeal.

  • Router with Bits: Use a router equipped with bits suitable for creating decorative profiles on the molding.

  • Table Saw or Miter Saw: Essential for cutting the molding to precise lengths and angles.

  • Measuring Tools: Ensure accurate measurements with a reliable tape measure and combination square.

  • Clamps: Necessary for securing the molding during cutting and assembly.

  • Sandpaper: For smoothing the molding and preparing it for finishing.

  • Wood Glue and Fasteners: To securely join the frame pieces.

  • Finishing Supplies: Select stains, paints, or sealants to achieve the desired appearance.

Designing the Picture Frame Molding Profile

Determine the profile that complements your artwork or photograph. Sketch the desired shape, considering elements like coves, beads, or ogees for the molding for picture frame. This design will guide your choice of router bits.

Preparing the Stock

Begin with boards that are flat, straight, and of uniform thickness. Cut the boards to the desired width of the molding, adding extra for the profile depth. Ensure the edges are square for consistent results.

Routing the Picture Frame Molding

Secure the wood to your workbench or use a router table for stability. Select the appropriate router bit and set the cutting depth. Feed the wood steadily against the router bit, maintaining consistent pressure to achieve a uniform profile. Make multiple passes if necessary to prevent tear-out and achieve the desired depth.

Cutting the Miter Joints

Measure and mark the picture frame molding lengths based on the dimensions of the item to be framed, accounting for the rabbet (the recess where the artwork sits). Use a miter saw to cut 45-degree angles at each end, ensuring the lengths are precise for tight-fitting corners.

Assembling the Frame

Dry-fit the pieces to check for accurate alignment. Apply wood glue to the mitered edges and join them together. Use corner clamps to hold the picture frame molding in place as the glue dries. For additional strength, consider reinforcing the joints with splines or V-nails.

Finishing the Frame

Once the glue has cured, sand the frame to smooth out any imperfections and prepare the surface for finishing. Apply your chosen stain or paint, followed by a protective sealant. Allow adequate drying time between coats as recommended by the manufacturer.

Installing the Artwork

Cut a piece of glass or acrylic to fit the frame opening if desired. Place the artwork or photograph, followed by a backing board, into the rabbet. Secure the contents with glazing points or flexible tabs. Attach hanging hardware, such as D-rings and wire, to the back of the frame for display.

By following these steps, you can create a custom picture frame that not only enhances your artwork but also reflects your craftsmanship. This project offers a fulfilling opportunity to develop your woodworking skills and produce a functional, decorative item for your home or as a gift.
